How do I submit a site?
E-mail us at idp@sevensirens.com. If the site meets criteria (ie isn't supported by a major label, or company, and doesn't promote bigotry or hatred) we'll add it to the lists. Just send us...
The URL
Site name
a Brief Description (fifteen words or less)
Your name (no screen/user names) and, if you want, your URL for the contributors section. Be sure to have "Indie Database Project" as your subject heading. And please if you don't include a personal URL then do have your first and last name (we have two Sarahs up already and no last names or URLs to distinguish them).
How do I report a dead link?
E-mail us at idp@sevensirens.com. Pretty much any problem on the IDP can be solved by e-mailing us at that address.
I can't find a band/company/etc on your list that I know was there before. What happened?
They may have been picked up by a major label, or disbanded. The company/band may have changed its name. The site may have also become a dead link. Try a search engine or check out Subrosa for the latest information.
I don't think this band/company/etc…is DIY/Hardcore enough. You should take them off your list.
No. It comes down to this: we don't have any standards for the sites listed here (save that they not be bigoted/racist/sexist/etc or supported by major companies). The sites may be ugly, they may not be as into the indie scene as some of us, they may be owned by weekend housewife crafters or hardcore freegan communal anarchists. We don't distinguish between them because this site is for everybody in the indie community. Not just the people you'd hang out with or the people you agree with.
I think the IDP could be vastly improved.
Really? Cool. E-mail us with your ideas. We're always looking for ways to make the site easier to use and faster to access.
You cut off part of my company's name when you listed it! What's up with that?
Well, it's like this. Nearly every distro, record label, and productions company has their purpose in their company/business name. D00d Productions, D00d Distro, D00d Records. And when every company has that in their name people stop really paying attention to what they're reading and skim until something stands out and catches their eye (it's a fact or something...look it up). So in order to give you a better chance of getting noticed, and to cut down on annoying repetition, we just don't put in that part. It's standard. If, however, we cut out something else (if you're Gee Whiz, Bob Records and we put Gee Whiz instead), let us know and we'll fix it asap. Because we love you. A lot. Why haven't you called us back yet? Did you get that letter we sent? ...
Why did you only list one of my sites?
For any number of reasons. They might not meet our criteria. If the site hasn't been updated in over a year and has no pertininent information we'll consider it a dead link. The most common reason is that you have a main site which links to all of your smaller sites. If that's so we'll only list the main site, this is in the spirit of fairness to other sites listed (multiple listing obviously give one company more exposure than others) and to save space. If your main site links to all of your other sites people will still find it, don't worry.
My site hosts my productions company, my zine, and my band. Why isn't listed under all of those sections?
Again, for the sake of fairness and space, we only list each site once. Either you can choose which section best represents what you've got, or we can choose for you, but you only get one listing.
Why is it taking so long for the links I sent to appear on the site?
You may have noticed that when you submitted links you were told they were put into 'the queue' (dun dun DUN!). The IDP is updated once a week (current update day is Sunday). The site is updated by sections because it's honestly just faster to update one page at a time than trying to update seven pages at once. This means that each week is devoted to one section, like 'Resources' or 'Literature'. This also means that it may take weeks for your links to appear. This can happen anyway as, at any given moment, the link queue is rather large (hundreds and growing).
Who does all this?
Technically it's just me, Lore, and the occasional volunteer ( which is why the FAQ says 'us' and not 'I'). I started it in January 2005 (I think). Updates are occasionally put off because I also own and run a business (among other reasons). I apologize profusely for my tardiness but if you'd like to see more regular updates you might consider volunteering. I could definitely use the help.
